Is our future safe???
She never thought while driving home from work on Sep 30, that it will be the last time she will be doing that. It was around 3 am in the morning when a .315 bore bullet hit her, taking her life . Soumya Vishwanathan, an alumni of IIMC, Dhenkanal, was working as a producer with Headlines Today at their office in Jhandewalan. The chief minister of New Delhi, Smt Shiela Dixit gave a statement on the incident saying that , "Working women shouldn't try to be adventurous in the night." It seemed very appalling and confusing coming from someone who belongs to the same gender as Soumya and uses every form of media to promote 'Welfare of Women' and is potrayed as running on the forefront of a pro-women state campaign. Have we chosen the right profession in a country like India, where in an age of iPhones, Space Exploration, Nuke deal etc., we are still dangling over the basic issues like safety for working women on roads. Thats something we will all have to ponder upon as we move towards a media profession in few months. Its a grave day for all of us,our eyes are moist & hearts are heavy, as we bid our goodbyes to a budding talent and a senior to look upto. Its high time that we take things into our hands and stop such mishaps to take place again...
