Its official now! Smoking has been banned in India, effective from Oct 2. So beware all you smokers, its prohibited in all public places, including restaurants and offices and if you are caught while smoking at these places, you will be charged with a fine of Rs.200. You are only allowed to light a cigarette inside your home, in your car with the window glasses rolled up or on a road. It seems logical in a nation which loses 10 lakh people every year to tobacco related ailments but at the same time,is it practical to implement here, where you can get away with even murder if you have the correct sources and resources. The Government has come up with such groundbreaking ideas in the past as well like smoking was banned at public places in Delhi in the year 1997 as well but did it stop people from smoking? There was infact an increase in the tobacco consumption since then.
Thus it becomes important for the Government and the citizens to come up with ways for implementation of laws rather than just passing them on paper. People should be involved to help implement these laws as its human nature to retaliate to things which are forced on them and a higher possibility to do it if its prohibited.
She never thought while driving home from work on Sep 30, that it will be the last time she will be doing that. It was around 3 am in the morning when a .315 bore bullet hit her, taking her life . Soumya Vishwanathan, an alumni of IIMC, Dhenkanal, was working as a producer with Headlines Today at their office in Jhandewalan. The chief minister of New Delhi, Smt Shiela Dixit gave a statement on the incident saying that , "Working women shouldn't try to be adventurous in the night." It seemed very appalling and confusing coming from someone who belongs to the same gender as Soumya and uses every form of media to promote 'Welfare of Women' and is potrayed as running on the forefront of a pro-women state campaign. Have we chosen the right profession in a country like India, where in an age of iPhones, Space Exploration, Nuke deal etc., we are still dangling over the basic issues like safety for working women on roads. Thats something we will all have to ponder upon as we move towards a media profession in few months. Its a grave day for all of us,our eyes are moist & hearts are heavy, as we bid our goodbyes to a budding talent and a senior to look upto. Its high time that we take things into our hands and stop such mishaps to take place again...
